Sustainable Tours & Traditional Textiles

Supporting women artisans through sustainable tourism and traditional craft

Handwoven in Peru

Who We Are

Awamaki is a nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to connecting Andean artisan weavers with global markets through traditional textiles and community-based tourism. We collaborate with women artisans to support their efforts towards educational and financial independence.

Honoring Community, Culture, and Craft

Spinning, weaving, and fiber arts have long been central to the warmth, welfare, and cultural identity of Andean families.

Awamaki partners with women artisans in Ollantaytambo and surrounding Sacred Valley communities to create sustainable income through traditional textile arts, fair trade products, and cultural experiences. Our handmade accessories are grounded in Andean textile techniques, while our tours invite travelers to understand the people, process, and traditions behind them.

Through long-term partnerships, product development, training, and thoughtful tourism, Awamaki helps connect artisan knowledge to opportunities that support women-led income and keep cultural traditions rooted in community life.

Investing in Women

As a women-led organization, we support Quechua women in building sustainable income through their craft. We partner with roughly 180 women across 9 cooperatives, all located within 45 minutes to 2 hours of Ollantaytambo, right here in the Sacred Valley.

For many, this is a first opportunity to earn. Over 30% of women had no income prior to working with Awamaki. Today, that income creates real change, with 90% of artisans using their earnings to help send their children to school and build stronger futures for their families.

A Different Approach to Tourism

We believe travel should benefit the people and places it touches. While tourism in this region often concentrates spending around a small number of destinations, we aim to spread those benefits more widely by creating experiences that bring travelers to the communities surrounding Ollantaytambo.

By giving people a reason to stay, explore, and engage locally rather than simply pass through on the way to Machu Picchu, our model supports long-term relationships, fair compensation, and meaningful cultural exchange.

The result is tourism that creates real impact for the communities involved, while offering travelers a more memorable and authentic experience.

Volunteer & Intern in the Sacred Valley

Go beyond a visit and become part of the work. Awamaki offers volunteer and internship opportunities in Ollantaytambo connected to women’s cooperatives, sustainable tourism, and community education.

Whether staying for a few weeks or several months, volunteers work alongside Awamaki staff and local partners while contributing to long-term community initiatives.

Donate to Educational and Training Programs

Support programs developed in collaboration with artisan partners and their communities. Donations help fund education, training, and long-term economic opportunities for women in the Andes.
